Though the BMW C 400 GT is yet to be launched, dealers have already started accepting bookings for the maxi-scooter. With the arrival of the BMW C 400 GT, we can see that more manufacturers have identified a market for maxi-scooters in India. This means more two-wheeler manufacturers will be rolling out their maxi-scooters in India sooner than one might imagine. That being said, Yamaha also launched their latest Aerox 155 maxi-scooter in India. Though it is not a true-blue maxi-scooter like the larger BMW C 400 GT, it is currently the closest to a true-blue maxi-scooter. The teaser video from BMW shows some design traits of the upcoming BMW C 400 GT. For starters, it is big!. The whole package will attract eyeballs with its massive size and well-sculpted body panels. At the front, the all-LED headlamp set-up dominates the front fascia, and just above the headlight is a large windscreen to deflect wind at triple-digit speeds. Moving onto the sides, the sheer surface area of the body panels and the large stepped seats dominate the visual experience, and it is very hard to focus on other things if this scooter is parked near you. BMW C 400 GT is available in three different colours; Triple Black, Alpine White, and Callisto Grey Metallic. Apart from that, the maxi-scooter also gets golden brake calipers. The BMW C 400 GT also gets a telescopic front fork and double aluminium swingarm type rear suspension with double spring struts. Apart from this, the upcoming BME C 400 GT is loaded with many features such as keyless ride, ride-by-wire technology, USB charging socket, self-calibrating ASC, a TFT Screen, large underseat storage and many more features. The TFT screen on the BMW C 400 GT displays essential information like range, navigational direction, fuel consumption and a few more Users of BMW C 400 GT can also use BMW Motorrad Connectivity to access a wide range of smart features and can use the handlebar-mounted multi-controller to access many functions such as music, calls notifications, contacts, etc. Apart from these, BMW is also offering heated grips, heated seats and an anti-theft alarm system. Powering this large maxi-scooter is a powerful enough 350cc, single-cylinder, water-cooled petrol engine. This engine produces almost 34 Bhp at 7,500rpm and 35Nm of torque at 5,750rpm. Being a maxi-scooter, the power and torque from the engine is sent to the rear wheels via a stepless CVT gearbox, and the maxi-scooter has a top speed of approximately 140 kmph. Thoughts About BMW C 400 GT Once BMW officially launches the BMW C 400 GT in India, it will be the most powerful and fastest scooter in India. Unlike the Yamaha Aerox 155 maxi-scooter which aims at a much broader audience in the Indian market, BMW Motorrad will be targeting a niche customer base only with its BMW C 400 GT. That being said, the arrival of the BMW C 400 GT will open a whole new segment in India, and if turns out to be successful, it will attract maxi-scooters from other two-wheeler manufacturers as well. TheBMW C 400 GT is offered Petrol engine in the Indonesia. The new Scooter from BMW comes in a total of 2 variants. If we talk about BMW C 400 GT engine specs then the Petrol engine displacement is 350 cc. C 400 GT is available with CVT transmission. BMWCanada added a new “GT” model to their lineup based on the C 400 X platform. The “GT” version is more touring oriented stye and comfort rather than sport. BMW USA declined to import the C 400 GT and instead rolled over their scooter lineup unchanged, aside from dropping the C 650 Sport which was never sold in Canada. SummaryThe C 400 is a great looking scooter and is, arguably, the best looking mid-sized maxi-scooter on the styling BMW engineering Reasonable price ConsLimited suspension travelStorageBMW C 400 X / GT The C 400 X is BMW’s first mid-sized adventure scooter. It was announced in fall 2017 for a worldwide release in 2018 including the USA and Canadian markets. It remains on sale in Canada as of 2020, but was discontinued in the USA after 2019. The C 400 X was later joined in some markets by the C 400 GT, which offers more touring oriented styling and amenities on the same platform. The “GT” was launched in Canada for 2019 and remains on sale there as of 2020, but it has not been introduced to the USA. Model Background The C 400 X above is BMW’s first contribution to the medium sized maxi scooter segment – a niche that’s gotten quite popular over the last couple years with new entrants from Suzuki Burgman 400 and Yamaha X-MAX 300. The C 400 X was first revealed at the 2017 EICMA motorcycle show in Milan, with production beginning shortly thereafter for a mid 2018 introduction in North America as a 2019 model. Like BMW’s previous C 600 Sport, the C 400 X combines a maxiscooter look with more sporty/adventure styling. The C 400 GT below was launched about a year later and parallels BMWs C 650 GT offering by providing more traditional maxiscooter styling and amenities on the same platform chassis and engine. The GT is about $1300 more expensive but does differ in many ways such as the taller windscreen. Motor Propulsion for both the GT and X models is provided by a single cylinder engine which displaces only 350cc, despite the “400” name of these scooters. The engine is equipped with the usual range of motor features liquid cooling, fuel injection, OHC and an impressive compression ratio. The result is 34 hp 7500 RPM and lbs-ft torque 6000 RPM. That yields a 0-60 mph time of seconds which sounds slow compared to the car world, but is quite good for a scooter. Most manufacturers don’t release 0-60 times, but the C 400 should be faster than Suzuki’s new Burgman which despite an extra 50cc, actually makes less power HP and hauls around another 25 lbs of weight. Yamaha’s 28 hp X-MAX 300 should be in the rear view mirror as well. Top speed for the C 400 is electronically governed to 86 mph, which seems fair but is slower than Suzuki’s 95 mpg Burgman 400. Fuel milage is rated at 67 mpg, which gives a range just over 200 miles on its gallon tank. Design The C 400 X brings a unique style to the scooter world. It’s sized like a touring scooter, but the style is decidedly an adventure scooter with blacked out sections of bodywork, an asymmetrical headlight and a short beak under the headlight similar to the larger adventure bikes from BMW. As such, this maxiscooter achieves an aggressive off-road look that work to dispel the wimpy image of scooters. In a sense, it feels like a BMW version of a grown up Honda Ruckus. The C 400 GT uses more traditional styling but still has a somewhat aggressive, modern look typical of a BMW compared to the more subdued stylings often seen from the Japanese makers. Braking and Handling ABS is standard on the C 400 like all scooters from BMW. This ABS is linked to dual rotors 265mm and 4 pistons up front, while a simpler single rotor 265mm, single piston disc brake suffices in the rear. The braking bits are from Brembo under the BYBRE brand so they should be more than capable of controlling a relatively light machine. The C 400 X is 450 lbs while the GT is 467. For comparison, Suzuki’s Burgman 400 tallies 474 lbs on the scale, while smaller 300cc machines from Honda Forza and Yamaha X-Max weigh 400 – 428 lbs. Also standard is traction control aka ASC or Automatic Stability Control. While the C 400 X certainly looks like an adventure bike, it doesn’t have the suspension to back up that look with only of travel in the front BMW’s adventure bikes have around 7” of travel. It does have dual shocks in the rear though with adjustable pre-load, so the C 400 X should be a capable machine even if it can’t quite live up to its look. Features and Amenities BMW has equipped the C 400 both X and GT with their “Flexcase” storage – an idea first seen on their larger C 650 Sport. The Flexcase is basically a trap door in the bottom of the underseat area. It opens and expands downward to increase capacity. It’s a clever idea as it enables a passenger to sit lower, but you wouldn’t want to forget it’s deployed when you ride off or it would rub on the rear wheel. Without the Flexcase deployed there is moderate space under the seat one helmet can fit at the front, and then with it deployed you can stow two helmets. In addition to the underseat area, the C 400 X has two small storage areas up front, one of which has a 12V plug for accessories. Other notable features include an LED headlight, folding passenger pages and an optional color TFT screen like BMW’s larger adventure bikes which bluetooth integrates with your phone. It’s too bad the screen is optional, because it looks fantastic. Other optional features are heated grips, heated seats, two styles of top cases, racks, taller windscreen, keyless ride standard on the GT and a lower seat. With the keyless option, you can stow the keys in the front storage cubby instead of inserting them into the ignition. Discussion The C 400 is a great looking scooter. It pulls off the aggressive look better than Yamaha’s X-MAX which is nicely styled too and is, arguably, the best looking mid-sized maxi-scooter on the market. Given the nature of BMW’s pricing and more limited dealer network, the X-MAX should outsell the C 400, but the Bimmer is the nicer machine. The X-MAX retails for $5600 USD, while the C 400 X is priced at $7540 in Canada and $6795 in the USA, which is a very reasonable price Burgman 400 is $8299 in the USA. The Canada-only GT model is $1300 more expensive at $8750 + shipping. It’s great to see BMW offering a smaller scooter at a more attractive price point the C 650 Sport is $10g. Compared to BMW’s larger machines, the lower up front cost of the C 400 plus better fuel milage and lighter weight, will appeal to a much larger audience. It’s a nice move by BMW and it should transform them into a more well known manufacturer of scooters. It’s worth noting that Suzuki is regarded as the king of maxiscooters for a reason – they’ve got touring comforts nailed down. The new 2018 Burgman 400 moves away from this a little bit towards a more aggressive style and is quite a bit more expensive, but it’s still worth looking at if you’re envisioning touring in your future. The Suzuki wins on touring attributes like storage space and top speed. But at a lower price and with BMW engineering, the C 400 X is going to be popular for good reason. Also check out Yamaha’s X-Max before making a decision. Thebase price of the 2022 BMW C 400 GT Motorcycle is $8495. This is $983.20 less expensive than its competition. The Single-Cylinder engine in the 2022 BMW C 400 GT Motorcycle has a displacement of 350 cc which is 24% less than its competition. BMW Motorrad has had the C400X and C400GT on their urban mobility segment since 2018 and 2019 respectively, so you'll be pleased to hear that there’s an update of these nifty looking scooters for 2021! Of course, maxi-scooters are a bit of a love em or hate em affair, some will absolutely love the versatility and dynamic riding offered by a larger scooter like this - whilst others won’t be able to look past the style. Either way, both models will be receiving quite a raft of updates for 2021, with E-gas’, a new engine management system and optimised centrifugal clutch bringing Euro 5 refinements to the 350cc single-cylinder motor, despite still providing 34 bhp and 35Nm of torque with peak torque available 250 revs lower. Euro-5 updates for BMW scooters C400X & C400GTE-gas’ isn’t some form of electronic fuel, by the way, it’s actually an electronic throttle grip with partnering electronically operated throttle valve like a ride-by-wire system, and paired with the CVT transmission and centrifugal clutch will overall promise a much smoother ride, with far greater stability particularly when idling. The brakes have had a look in on the new parts for this year, with new front calipers to offer a clearly defined pressure point’, along with aligned brake lever travels for a symmetrical braking feel. Assists have been refined with Automatic Stability Control updated to now automatically calibrate, quoted with a much greater feel on wet and slippery roads. A couple of changes have been made to rider comforts, with lighting for the under-seat storage now coming from above rather than the side, and a new USB port in the front right storage accompanies the 12-volt socket. Lastly, it goes without saying, but there are new colours for the C400X and C400GT - two new colours for each, and a Sport’ C400X and Triple Black’ C400GT also available.

Improvements all around, the BMW C 400 GT doesn’t disappoint by , on April 6, 2021, 0400 The bigwigs over at the Bayerische Motoren Werke pared down its scooter exports to the to a single model ahead of MY2022, the new 2022 BMW C 400 GT. No, it’s not net-new, but it does carry a number of improvements in both the mechanics and the electronics to make it new enough. Generous under-seat storage and a vented windshield contribute to its utility as a commuter and/or grocery-getter. Perhaps best of all, the drivetrain has long-enough legs to make it suitable for interstate/highway travel and sure to find fun wherever it goes. Year 2022 Make Model Engine single cylinder Displacement 350 cc Top Speed 86 mph Est. Price 8495 Price 2022 BMW C 400 GT Design Top-lit eight-gallon storage compartment TFT display LED lighting Keyless ride All-round LED lighting and top-lighting in the storage compartment are new for 2022. As ever, the C 400 GT carries itself with class, dignity, and elegance. The front fairing/legguard structure extends forward to make the front end look like a predator that is ready to pounce. A fork-mount front fender barely peeks out from between the fairing lowers that double as housings for the recessed turn signals, which is rather chic if you ask me. Since the scoop-shape windscreen is well vented at the leading edge, some of the air bleeds behind to stabilize the upper slipstream and combat the wearisome head-buffet effect that can make even short trips a drag. Behind the glass, a color TFT display bundles the instrumentation with the BMW Motorrad Connectivity controls that, in turn, manage the multi-controller and associated apps, plus it enables a Navigator function. To the right of the steering column in the inner fairing is a wee glovebox that comes complete with a USB charging port so you can charge your mobile devices under way. It is secured by a full-size, flip-down cover, and the USB port comes with a weather-resistant plug for an extra layer of protection. The ignition switch comes with Beemer’s Keyless Ride feature that lets you leave the key in your pocket for your convenience rather than hanging out of the switch. Also in that category is the Flexcase feature that increases the secure, dry, under-seat storage to 45 liters, up from a resting 31 liters, and the top-down lighting in the compartment that improves low-light visibility of whatever swag you’re hauling. The chiseled seat buoys your butt at inches off the deck, a height that the factory calls “low” and it is relatively speaking, but will actually be tip-toe territory for the vertically-challenged rider. It’s a scooter so you have room to hop forward. All of the lighting, front to back, comes with LED projectors to maximize visibility both ways. Good thing too, since two of the three color packages are heavy on the dark paint. 2022 BMW C 400 GT Chassis Tour-tastic ride Improved brakes with ABS Agile performance New for 2022, the C 400 GT has improved brakes for better stability and feedback. Tubular steel and die-cast aluminum make up the underframe structure with a double swingarm, also in aluminum, to articulate for the rear wheel on the C 400 GT. It establishes a rake angle that is toward the agile end of the range with inches of trail that is beyond agile. Dual, coil-over shocks support the rear end and dampen the motion of the swingarm with the only suspension tweak to be found in a variable-preload spring feature. Up front, a set of 35 mm, rwu, telescopic forks take care of business over inches of travel ahead of inches of travel at the rear end. Asymmetrical, cast aluminum rims round out the rolling chassis in a 15-inch and 14-inch diameter at the front and rear, respectively. A 120/70 and 150/70 hoop makes the connection to terra firma with new-for-2022 dual, four-piston calipers up front and a single-pot caliper out back. The new calipers have better piston response, which in turn gives better feedback at the levers and provides better stability. Front and rear discs measure out at 264 mm, plus, Beemer’s own ABS feature comes with the stock equipment package to allow you to get the most you can safely get out of the anchors. 2022 BMW C 400 GT Drivetrain Water-cooled 350 cc single-cylinder engine 34 horsepower and 26 lb-ft of torque New electronic throttle and new engine management system Smoother, more sensitive throttle response Improved ASC Automatic Stability Control Updates to the engine control systems make for smoother power delivery and increased safety. The safety electronics on the C 400 GT continue into the engine compartment with an updated-for-2022 Automatic Stability Control feature that limits slip under inclement riding conditions for another guard against disaster. Additionally, the factory ditched the manual radius calculation system in favor of a new automatic one, so there’s no need for any kind of mechanical action on your part when you replace your worn old rubber with fresh, full-diameter hoops. A new R-b-W throttle control works with the new engine management system and equally new Idle Speed Control for smoother transitions and some anti-stall protection, even in cold conditions for you intrepid all-weather riders out there. Power comes from a 350 cc thumper with an 80 mm bore, mm stroke, and spicy compression ration that will demand high-octane fuel to prevent knocking/pinging/dieseling. Digital engine management and a three-way catalytic converter help the mill meet its emissions obligations. It cranks out 34 horsepower at 7,500 rpm with 26 pound-feet of torque at 5,750 250 rpm sooner than previous model, and turns in a top speed of 86 mph, which should be plenty no matter where you ride. A centrifugal dry clutch couples engine power to the stepless Continuously Variable Transmission gearbox that delivers twist-and-go-operation with no shifter or manual clutch to complicate things. MSRP starts at $ which is not bad for the level of electronic sophistication. BMW looks to garner a starting price of $8,495. It can be had in the sinister Triple Black package, bright Alpine White paint, or the stealthy, flat Callisto Gray Metallic. This model was scheduled for a second-quarter 2021 release, and should be available soon as of the time of this writing. A full array of accessories are available to help you get set up just how you like it with goodies like the heated grips/seat, security alarm, top case, and even more infotainment features. 2022 BMW C 400 GT Competitors As BMW's only scooter in the market for 2022, it has competition in the Burgman. BMW builds a proper urban commuter-scooter, it’s true, but I think Suzuki deserves a crack with its world-recognized Burgman 400. Suzuki Burgman 400 Like the Bavarians, Suzuki went with widespread blackout treatment, and doubled down with a Metallic Matte Black No. 2 paint package on the body panels, with the exception of the blue accents on the rims. While the Burgman hits all of the same design high points as its European counterpart, it does so in a much less-angular way to leave the Burgman arguably a bit more elegant looking than the C 400 GT, though both maintain a business-like mien that is undeniable. Looks aside, Suzuki wins in displacement with a 399 cc thumper on power-delivery duty along with an Automatic Idle Speed Control of its own but no answer for Beemer’s ASC feature, and that’s a fairly major discrepancy to be sure. It looks like Suzuki fails to capitalize on it greater cubeage with only ponies to be had, and pounds o’ grunt against 34/26 from the Beemer, so chalk up another victory for the C 400 GT. Both use some sort of CVT gearbox for twist-and-go operation, so there’s nothing to choose between the two here. The Burgman rolls for $8,299, but it’s unclear if that couple o’ hundred will make up for the relative lack of tech and horsepower. Read our full review of the Suzuki Burgman 400. He Said “I’m thinking not so much. I’d shell out twice that difference for the BMW in this instance for the traction control, power, and top speed mainly. Lookswise, it’s almost too angular for my taste, though I’m digging what there is well enough I suppose. No matter which paint package you choose, you can count on the angles shining through. Also, you can pencil me in as a fan of the matte black paint.” She Said My wife and fellow motorcycle writer, Allyn Hinton, says, “The BMW C 400 GT isn’t new new. It’s been in other markets for a couple of years, but it’s new in the market with these updates and improvements. The electronics are sophisticated for a scooter, but remember this is a mid-class business scooter with emphasis on touring, so you expect it to come with bells and whistles for long-haul comfort. The ride is lively, handling is responsive and nimble, and it’ll handle highway speeds with confidence. BMW doesn’t disappoint.” 2022 BMW C 400 GT SpecificationsFurther Reading BMW Motorrad Read more BMW news. TJ Hinton got an early start from his father and other family members who owned and rode motorcycles, and by helping with various mechanical repairs throughout childhood. That planted a seed that grew into a well-rounded appreciation of all things mechanical, and eventually, into a formal education of same. Though primarily a Harley rider, he has an appreciation for all sorts of bikes and doesn't discriminate against any particular brand or region of origin. He currently holds an Associate's degree in applied mechanical science from his time at the Read full bio About the author Related Articles
